ONLINE TEACHING DURING SCHOOL CLOSURE DUE TO THE CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC.
Like the rest of the world, Tanzania was hit by this unprecedented Corona virus in March where the first case was reported.We as a school started preparing our students by educating them on keeping clean as the WHO instructions.
March the 17th 2020 the Government announced that all schools and colleges should close. Students were asked to stay at home and keep safe.DIS embarked on online teaching as we were determined to make sure our students kept on learning.
This has been a very interesting journey for all, parents, teachers and students. As we were caught unaware, many found it a challenge to cope with the Google Classrooms and Zoom Classes that were conducted online.
Some of the challenges were from parent’s views such as few gadgets at home as compared to the number of children. Also the knowledge of how to operate online learning.
So it has been a learning path for many, however we have had great cooperation from the parents, our PTA was also quick to raise matters arising and we sorted them out together.
At the moment the Google Class and Zoom lessons are running very well. Teachers are making sure coverage of the syllabus is done and will be completed on time.
Due to this style of learning, some parents have reported students becoming very responsible and independent in their learning.
“I got a very positive parents one evening, mama Peter Natay, just called to say how happy she and other parents (friends to her) are with online teaching. She said her son is never the same, he is so responsible and independent, teachers are marking just like they are in class and very clear feedback” is given to Principal Catherine Shindika.

We must say that the COVID 19 times has had negative and positive effects in the society. With DIS one of the positive aspects is teachers advancing so much in IT.
